CERAMIC STUDIO SAFETY “SILICA EXPOSURE OVER TIME CAN PRODUCE THE PULMONARY CONDITION CALLED SILICOSIS”. “SILICOSIS IS A DISABLING, PROGRESSIVE, AND SOMETIMES FATAL PULMONARY DISEASE CHARACTERIZED BY SILICA CONTAINING NODULES IN THE LUNG”- NIOSH “THE NATIONAL TOXICOLOGY PROGRAM HAS CONCLUDED THAT INHALING SILICA MAY REASONABLY BE ANTICIPATED TO BE A CARCINOGEN”-NIOSH (1999)

CERAMIC STUDIO SAFETY KEEP DUST UNDER CONTROL! CLEAN UP SPILLS USING A DAMP SPONGE WET WIPE SURFACES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE WORK ON CANVAS BOARDS/ NEWSPAPER FOR EASY CLEAN-UP ALL CANVAS TABLE SURFACES SHOULD BE SCRAPED, AND THEM WIPED WITH A LARGE WET SPONGE. GLAZE AREA TABLES SHOULD ALSO BE WASHED WITH A WET SPONGE. BRUSHES AND TOOLS SHOULD BE WASHED AFTER USE.

CERAMIC STUDIO SAFETY WEAR MASKS IN HIGH DUST AREAS OR IF YOU HAVE A SENSITIVITY TO AIRBORNE PARTICULATES. CUTS AND OPEN WOUNDS SHOULD BE PROTECTED. DO NOT EAT, DRINK, APPLY MAKE- UP OR STORE FOOD IN WORK AREAS! DO NOT EAT, DRINK, APPLY MAKE- UP OR STORE FOOD IN WORK AREAS! WASH YOUR HANDS THOROUGHLY TO PREVENT INGESTION

CERAMIC STUDIO SAFETY NEVER USE ANY UTENSILS AS TOOLS FOR CERAMICS THAT WILL LATER BE USED IN THE KITCHEN WITH FOOD USE A APRON, COVERALLS, OR SMOCK WHICH CAN BE LEFT IN THE WORK AREA MOP THE FLOORS EVERY DAY AFTER EVERY CLASS TO CONTROL THE DUST.

CERAMIC STUDIO SAFETY KILN SAFETY- KILN SAFETY- DO NOT TOUCH ANY KILN UNLESS INSTRUCTED AND TRAINED TO DO SO. USE HEAVY GLOVES WHEN HANDLING HOT ITEMS.

CERAMIC STUDIO SAFETY GENERAL SAFETY TIPS- BE CAREFUL OF SHARP EDGES ON GLAZED PIECES. THEY WILL CUT SKIN EASILY AND SHOULD BE SMOOTHED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. USE SAFETY GLASSES WHEN EVER NEEDED. (CHIPPING KILN SHELVES FOR EXAMPLE) STUDENTS MUST WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES THAT ARE NOT SLICK. STUDENTS SHOULD WEAR LONG PANTS. ALWAYS BE CAREFUL USING SHARP KNIVES & TOOLS DO NOT CUT TOWARDS YOUR OTHER HAND DO NOT THROW SHARPS IN THE CLAY BUCKET

CERAMIC STUDIO SAFETY EVERYONE EVERY DAY: PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR WORK OUT BUT PUT WORK, TOOLS & MATERIALS AWAY AT THE END OF EACH CLASS DO NOT LEAVE ITEMS ON THE FLOOR TRIPPING HAZARD DIFFICULT TO MOP ALL TABLES SHOULD BE CLEARED & CLEANED TOOLS, BATS & BOARDS RETURNED TO PROPER PLACE LIDS ON BUCKETS DEPOSIT CLAY IN THE APPROPRIATE RECYCLE BUCKET

CERAMIC STUDIO SAFETY SLAB ROLLER- ALWAYS ROLL CLAY BETWEEN 2 LAYERS OF CANVAS. CANVAS SHOULD BE RETURNED. OPERATES FROM ONE DIRECTION. DO NOT FORCE WHEEL. PLASTER DRYING BATS- USE PLASTIC OR WOOD WHEN SCRAPING PLASTER AND SCRAPE ONLY INTO THE GARBAGE. AVOID GETTING PLASTER IN THE CLAY WHICH CAN CAUSE ‘POP-OUTS’ DURING FIRING

CERAMIC STUDIO SAFETY SINKS- UNCONTAMINATED CLAY SHOULD GO IN THE RECYCLE BUCKET CONTAMINATED IN THE TRASH- DO NOT PUT CLAY PIECES IN THE SINK.
