The 5 A’s – Background Paris Hilton asked you to help plan her family’s next Hilton Hotel. It will be built in Hawaii. The more money they make from the hotel in the first year, the more money you get paid. READ ONLY

What is your plan? Geographers analyze spatial relationships to look for patterns and trends. You must use the 5 A’s: Ask  Acquire  Analyze  Arrange  Apply READ ONLY

1. Ask First, geographers ask questions to help them make decisions and solve problems. –Key Question: Where should the hotel be located? –What is the economy like? –How often do the volcanoes erupt? –Task  Come up with 2 more questions that a geographer might ask in our hotel situation COPY WHAT IS IN THE BOX

2. Acquire Next, geographers go out and find the answer to the questions they asked. –To learn about the economy in the area…  they find the location of their competition –We need data on volcano eruptions COPY WHAT IS IN THE BOX

Locations of hotels in the area.

3. Analyze Next, geographers analyze their findings and the answers to the questions –What does the data say? –Is it positive or negative? –How should we present our information to Mr. Hilton? COPY WHAT IS IN THE BOX

4. Arrange Next, geographers arrange the data so that it is easy to read and interpret. –Put data into charts, graphs, tables, presentations COPY WHAT IS IN THE BOX

Shark Bites in Hawai’i Summer Fall Winter Spring Injured tourists

5. Apply Finally, they make their decisions and apply them to the project. –Build the hotel in the best possible area –Goal is to maximize profits

Your turn… Develop a plan using the 5 A’s to convince your parents to buy you one of the following items: IPhone, PS3, 61’ HDTV, stereo system, IPOD, car, or dirtbike. Explain each step of the 5 A process and how you intend to persuade your parents.

My plan for a __________ 1.Ask – 2.Acquire – 3.Analyze – 4.Arrange – 5.Apply SETUP
