WARM-UP Think of a time when you had a conflict. -How would having a friends support chained things?

Take-Away What were the causes of WWI?

Causes of War Tensions had been building in Europe for years! Militarism European Nations competed with each other to build the largest military - Great Britain & Germany wanted largest Navy - Russia, France, & Germany competed for the largest Army “arms race” driven by strong feelings of pride (nationalism) Alliances For protection (from the large militaries), European countries formed defensive partnerships and agreed to come others aid of attacked - CENTRAL POWERS = Austria-Hungary + Germany + Ottoman Empire - ALLIED POWERS = Great Britain + France + Russia

Nationalism Extreme pride in one’s culture and nation – - puts national interest ahead of global cooperation leads to fierce competition and antagonism in EuropeBALKAN TURMOIL (throw off imperialist rule) - Ethnic groups who did not have their own country wanted independence – promote their culture and interests above those of other countries. (Serbia, Bosnia, Croats, Yugoslavia) - Imperialism was against the beliefs of nationalists! Imperialism Countries increased their power and wealth by controlling others. - Industrialized countries acquire new (non-industrialized ) countries to supply them with raw materials. - Quarrels broke out over who should control those colonies /interested in the same area - Smaller countries did not always want to be controlled by others

Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand heir to the Austria- Hungarian thrown & his wife, Sophie, are shot by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand (wanted Bosnia to break from AH and join Serbia).

AH accuses Serbia government of organizing the assassination & declares war. Assassination Russia moves to protect Serbia and mobilizes forces for war AH ally Germany declares war on Russia & France Germany marches through neutral Belgium on the way to France Belgium’s ally Great Britain declares war on Germany On your map – sketch out what happened

Stop & Think Why is this conflict called a world war? Why might it be difficult to avoid (stay neutral) this kind of war?

Factors Contributing to WWI Directions: Identify the 4 MAIN causes of WWI. Then use your notes from today to add examples for each cause. Write a summary sentences that uses the following terms – Militarism, alliances, imperialism, nationalism, WWI, & Europe.
