“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” Sort your cards into 3 lists Are they traditionally taught by family, schools/teachers or a combination of schools/teachers and the family? Family Schools/teachers and Family Schools/teachers Now think about the present. Move any cards where you think there has been a change. Now decide whether the topics are controversial or uncontroversial – i.e. would people disagree about what should be taught on the basis of strongly held values Filling the Youth Development Vacuum- Could we, should we, how?

“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” Filling the Youth Development Vacuum- Could we, should we, how? Objectives To draw out ambiguities in the role of teachers and schools in youth development. To examine examples of programs in the youth sector that provide different elements of youth development. To share potential policies for addressing youth development through teaching and schools. Outcomes A clarified but personal view on the scope of teachers’ responsibilities for the development of young people. Increased knowledge of the broader youth sector and how it affects young people’s development. Potential policies on the role of teaching and schools within youth development.

“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” Which moved? Were there any disagreements in your pair/group? Which areas do you think would be particularly controversial? Looking at your cards from the starter exercise

“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” Using cutlery Making Conversatio n at dinner CountingReading storiesSex and relationships Attitudes towards drinking The Periodic Table Religion / Ethics / Morality CareersHousehold shopping Cooking family meals Voting and Politics Bringing up children Looking after children when they are sick Not dropping litter

“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” What problems/challenges might an extended scope present? Having to navigate around more controversial issues and take decisions on them. A change in the type of people becoming teachers and their motivations for doing so. A need to balance the academic curriculum/exam outcomes with “youth-development” outcomes. A change in student teacher relationships An increase in the need for communication with parents. A greater need for extended services. A need for more inter agency work- social services, youth clubs etc.

“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” Should teachers be involved in providing any of these types of services? Should teachers be linking with these service providers and how - what benefits might collaboration bring? Case Studies

“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” Kids Company Aim to provide all round support to counter the emotional shutting off that follows trauma and neglect Registering with a GP and/or optician, nurses and psychotherapists Providing alternative health therapies Holidays and evening trips Employment advice “Our unique multidisciplinary approach combines health, housing, emotional wellbeing, mental health, arts, sports, youth justice, education and employment. These interventions are designed to strengthen, supplement or substitute the child’s parenting experience.”

“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level”

“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” Policy groups… In groups pick a challenge or area of potential development and prepare a 4 point policy resolution that explains the context and makes recommendations e.g. - Teacher training - Teacher recruitment - Decision making on controversial/morally charged areas - Development of social skills - Balancing curriculum/exam outcomes and developmental priorities - Communication with and amongst parents - Building relationships with other service providers e.g. 1.Noting the increasing number of agencies involved in providing services for young people 2.Aware of the gains to be made through collaboration Recommends: - The creation of local youth taskforces with representatives from different services to identify gaps in provision and opportunities for collaboration - Coverage of “the wider youth sector” in all ITT (initial teacher training) programs

“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” Present your recommendations… Please also mention: What you think is the biggest challenge that has come out of today’s discussion. Any way it has affected how you see your role as a teacher. Any changes that you’d like to see in Education and youth provision

“Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” What have we covered… We have identified the social changes that have impacted on youth development and considered what new responsibilities teachers have We have analysed case studies to see how two organisations have moved into the youth development vacuum We have developed a range of ideas about how these changes can be reflected in policy Thank you for your ideas and participation.
