Environmental Stewardship BRAINSTORM What is the environment? What is stewardship?

Environmental Stewardship Environmental stewardship refers to the responsible use and protection of the natural environment through conservation and sustainable practices.

Responsible Use As a class, discuss how you SHOULD use your environment responsibly. What best practices do you participate in? What are some things you should never do?

Conservation Conservation refers to the supervision and careful utilization of the natural environment. This includes rivers, forests, natural lands and local centers. When we are thinking about conservation we must consider the prevention of waste, loss and overuse of the natural environment.

Sustainable Practice Sustainability refers to an environments ability to remain diverse and productive over long periods of time. Humans depend on healthy environments to ensure their survival within the ecosystem. Why do you think this is important? (discuss as a class)

Make a Commitment With the people at your table, come up with a motto or mission statement that expresses your commitment to environmental stewardship. You will get to share your mission statement with the class and then we will come up with a statement to follow as we engage in activities not only in this course, but in our daily lives!

“My World: Air, Water, Land” There are many ways that our World’s air, water and land interact with each other. You must create a poster with the theme “Air, Water, and Land working together” in mind. Consider conservation and sustainability of the natural environment in your creation. Keep in mind, your posters should convey a positive message for others.

Poster Project If you choose, your poster can be submitted to the Alberta Environmental Artworks Foundation as part of their 2013 Environmental Artwork constest. These are their guidelines.: Posters must incorporate creative and original art work and ideas. Cartoon, video game, movie/television characters and any copyrighted material will not be considered as original and cannot be used in the poster. Submissions of original art must be a minimum of 11" x 17" and maximum of 24" x 36". Posters must be on white poster paper, larger or smaller entries will not be accepted. Posters should not laminated. Any media may be used (watercolor, pen and ink, collage, markers etc.) however, posters must be flat, not 3-D. For privacy issues please do not place any information such as name, age or school on the front of the poster.
