Using The Leadership Challenge® To Leader Develop Senior Executives Jody R. Rogers, PhD, FACHE Program Manager, Executive Skills And Mickey Meis, Deputy, Leader Training Center

Challenges - Perceptions by attendees Know it all. Can’t (won’t) learn anything new. Leadership skills too “soft” to be of any use. I got here without formal leadership training, why start now? Where’s the evidence this actually works? Too busy for this!

Settings 1.50 Senior Healthcare Executives – CEOs (attending Pre-Command Course) - All had at least 20 years of military experience - Mixture of physicians, nurses, healthcare executives - Many had prior experience as a CEO - Conducted as a two day workshop

Settings continued: 2. Graduate Programs in Health Administration - 25 students at Trinity University - 35 to 50 students at the US Army-Baylor University Graduate Program (mid-level professionals) 3. Workshops for Senior Civil Servants in Federal Government - Full semester courses taught at graduate level

Procedures to Engage Executives 1.Establish context of how topic will be taught and emphasize what they will get out of it. LearnConfirmPrepare - Everyone can still learn more about leadership - Develop new tools to mentor future leaders

Defining the Context Backed by 25 years of original research and data from over 3 million leaders, The Leadership Challenge® is a Leadership development program by bestselling authors Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Approaching leadership as a measurable, learnable, and teachable set of behaviors, this proven leadership model proclaims Leadership Is Everyone’s Business. TLC is the leading authority of Evidence Based Leadership

Defining the Context – Cont. Leaders who use the five practices of exemplary leadership are seen by others as better leaders. They’re more effective in meeting job-related demands. They’re more successful in representing their units to upper management. They create higher-performing teams. They foster renewed loyalty and commitment. They increase motivational levels and willingness to work hard. They reduce absenteeism, turnover, and dropout rates. They possess higher degrees of personal credibility.

LPI Research , ,000 3,000,000

2. Emphasize entertainment while also educating – adult learning skills Movie clips ( Apollo 13, Master and Commander, etc) Relevant case studies ( military and medical) Recent leadership challenges within the industry Use of TLC tools as appropriate Relevant stories tied to each practice

3. Give participants plenty of time to share thoughts among themselves -Keep table size to no more than 6 participants per table -Give participants plenty of time to talk -Give every table an opportunity to share their thoughts with other tables -Assigned seating should be considered if at all possible

Critical Issues Encountered 1. Be prepared for many questions and concerns about LPI - Perceived as not accurate - Desire to rate themselves – Emphasize this is a measure of frequency observed, not a good or bad score - Be thoroughly prepared to discuss fine details of LPI

2. Be prepared for attendees who aren’t prepared - Some too busy to do personal best leadership experience - If LPI isn’t complete, have generic copies available for discussion purposes

The Way Ahead 1.Army Medical Department Center and School 2. Military Healthcare System 3. Federal Healthcare System 4. Healthcare Industry
