The kiwi is an endangered species. It's disappearing at a rate of 5.8 % per year, threatened by imported predators. such as dogs and stoats and by loss of habitat. om/ om/ It is unthinkable that kiwi should be allowed to disappear – the world would lose an intriguing bird genetically unchanged for millions of years. Saving kiwi brings communities together, creates employment and helps restore native forests where many other native species also live, and therefore also benefit. -the-bird/general/about-the-bird.html -the-bird/general/about-the-bird.html Images sourced from: bird/general/about-the-bird.html bird/general/about-the-bird.html

A tiny proportion of kiwi eggs produce a kiwi adult. About 50% of all kiwi eggs fail to even hatch – sometimes because of natural bacteria, sometimes because the adult bird is disturbed by predators. Of eggs that do hatch, about 90% of chicks are dead within 6 months. 70% of these are killed by stoats or cats, and about 20% die of natural causes or at the jaws and claws of other predators. Only 10% of kiwi chicks make it to six months. Fewer than 5% reach adulthood. about-the- bird/threats/threats.html about-the- bird/threats/threats.html There is no room to relax, however. Many kiwi live outside managed areas and these populations are expected to decline. Even within the managed areas, uncontrolled dogs can kill many birds very quickly. -the-bird/threats/threats.html -the-bird/threats/threats.html Images sourced from: bird/general/about-the-bird.html bird/general/about-the-bird.html

In pairs you need to design a technological contraption to help save the Kiwi from predators. You may use any of the cardboard or items brought in from home to make this contraption. You will need to draw a picture of your contraption and label the parts to explain what it does. Stoat Trap...
