Session Objectives By the end of this session, participants will be able to: – Define Student Learning Objectives (SLOs). – Identify the benefits of engaging in the SLO process system-wide.

A Note on the SLO Toolkit The SLO Toolkit, located on OSSE’s website,SLO Toolkit contains a series of resources designed to facilitate the SLO process. The symbol below appears on these training modules to encourage you to reference specific components of the SLO Toolkit:

Where do SLOs come from?

Student learning is the single most important indicator of educator effectiveness. As such, student achievement data will be used to inform educator evaluation.

SLOs: An Alternative Approach Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) present an alternative approach to measuring student learning in both tested and non-tested grades and subjects. The SLO process begins with the educator, and grounds the evaluative process in data analysis, a rich reflective practice and continuous feedback.

History of SLOs Initially piloted in Denver in Research found that that rigorous and high quality growth objectives were associated with higher levels of student achievement. Later adopted by: – New York State – Rhode Island – Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina – Austin, Texas

What are SLOs, and why use them?

Setting a high quality SLO is not likely, in and of itself, to produce more learning and improved outcomes for students.

What are SLOs? SLOs are specific and measurable.SLOs are aligned to standards. SLOs are based on available prior student learning and behavioral data. SLOs measure the most important learning for the course. An SLO is a long term, measurable academic goal that teachers set for students.

Why SLOs? SLOs reinforce, and can help to formalize, good teaching practice. SLOs acknowledge the value of teacher knowledge and teacher skill. SLOs are adaptable to changing standards, curriculum and students. SLOs encourage a collaborative process.

Dual Benefits of the SLO Process Trusts teachers to set goals for their own students, and set goals for their own evaluation. Facilitates deep collaboration between teachers and evaluators.

Previewing Training Module #2 In this presentation, we introduced Student Learning Objectives and discussed the rationale and benefits. In Deck 2, we will explore an example of an SLO and work to define the components. In Deck 3, we will walk through the process of setting SLOs.
