Crossing Boundaries: Bridging Communication Efforts both Across our Campus and with Local Community Colleges and Businesses to Recruit and Prepare Math and Science Teachers Babette M. Benken, Ph.D. Department of Mathematics & Statistics CSU, Long Beach AMTE 2010

Collaboration and Communication: The MSTI Partners Dept. of Science Education Dept. of Mathematics & Statistics College of Education Community Colleges Local Corporations

Overview of Primary MSTI Initiatives 1. Facilitated pathways between local community colleges and CSULB 2. Partnerships with local corporations (e.g., Boeing) 3. Specialized courses for CSET preparation or Subject Matter Authorization 4. Recruitment seminars/meetings/materials 5. Program advising

Overview of Primary MSTI Initiatives 6. Monetary support for candidates (stipends, scholarships) 7. Other support for candidates (e.g., seminars, tutoring, on-going advising) 8. Course improvements (e.g., revise curriculum, update technology and equipment) 9. Support for tenure-line faculty (e.g., travel, supplies, research resources) 10. Support for graduate students (e.g. research with math education faculty, seminars)

Specialized Content Courses for Mathematics Teachers–Benefits Provides alternative sequence for 32 units needed for Subject Matter Authorization Includes content needed for CSET exams Explores content in ways appropriate for teaching secondary mathematics (e.g., focus on concepts) Models/examines some teaching strategies for middle school mathematics (e.g., integrate technology and cooperative projects)
