Matter Properties, states, changes, and mixtures
Matter… is anything that has mass is anything that takes up space can be identified or described by different properties
Properties of Matter Can be used to identify or describe matter Examples: ◦ Color ◦ Smell ◦ Taste ◦ Texture ◦ Absorbency ◦ Buoyancy ◦ Density
There are 3 basic states of matter Solid Liquid Gas
Solid Particles are packed tightly together Particles move slowly but do not change positions Has a definite shape Examples: ◦ Ice ◦ Rock ◦ Paper ◦ Wood ◦ Metal ◦ Glass
Liquid Particles are close together, but not tightly packed Particles slide past each other Takes the shape of its container Examples: ◦ Water ◦ Oil ◦ Syrup
Gas Particles are far apart Particles move very quickly Takes the shape of the container, and expands to fill whatever space is available Examples: ◦ Water vapor ◦ Air
Matter is matter no matter the state! Matter is matter no matter the state!
Changes in matter can be… Physical Chemical
Physical changes Only change the appearance or state of matter Examples: ◦ Ice – water – steam ◦ Cutting paper ◦ Breaking a glass ◦ Making an object out of clay
Changes in Matter
Chemical changes Produces a new material Examples: ◦ Rust forming on metal ◦ Creating heat ◦ Bubbling/fizzing
Physical or Chemical?
Matter + Matter = ? Mixture – different types of matter are combined, but keep their own properties Parts can be separated Examples: ◦ Chex mix ◦ Mixed vegetables ◦ Salt water ◦ How can you separate the substances in a mixture? How can you separate the substances in a mixture?
Mixtures/Solutions When a substance is dissolved in another substance it is a solution. Examples: ◦ Salt + water ◦ Kool-aid + water ◦ Cocoa mix + water ◦ Sugar + water
Some things dissolve better than others… Solubility is the ability of one substance to dissolve in another substance Solubility can be increased by adding heat, motion, or crushing the substance being dissolved
Solute + Solvent = Solution
