LESSON OBJECTIVES 1. List and describe the five long term causes of World War I. 2. Apply knowledge of the mechanics of an alliance system as it relates to the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente.

NATIONALISM One’s extreme love of country. Ethnocentrism Culture Language Traditions

ECONOMIC IMPERIALISM Increasing colonial rivalry in the struggle for new markets, raw materials, and fields of investment. Bitter rivalry between Germany and France in Africa. Italy’s failure in imperialistic ventures. They felt left out.

COLONIAL AFRICA IN 1914

RIVAL ALLIANCES Europe was divided into rival armed camps with an obligation to step in if one country of the alliance were to be threatened or invaded. TRIPLE ALLIANCE- Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary. TRIPLE ENTENTE- Great Britain, France and Russia.

ALLIANCE SYSTEM BEFORE WORLD WAR I

Glorification of the ideals of a professional military class. MILITARISM All major European powers, except Great Britain had adopted compulsory military training during the 1870’s. By 1914, there were 4.5 million men under arms and $2 billion dollars were being spent on armaments by these powers Glorification of the ideals of a professional military class. Predominance of the armed forces in the administration or policy of the state. A policy in which military preparedness is of primary importance to a state.

INTERNATIONAL ANARCHY There was no international organization to control the actions of the major powers. This led to secret diplomacy and double-dealing which led to an atmosphere of suspicion, fear, and mutual mistrust.
