Row 1, Col 1 What are the three states of matter? Solid, liquid and gas are the three states of matter.

1,2 What three words would identify the following definitions in order? has definite shape and size has definite size, but no shape has no definite shape or size SOLID, LIQUID, GAS

1,3 The property of matter that compares whether an objects sinks or floats in water is _____. density

1,4 How do we make liquid water change into a gas? By increasing temperature

2,1 How are the particles arranged in a solid? The particles in a solid are close together, like neat and even stacks of tiny balls. Each particle moves back and forth around one point. This arrangement of particles gives a solid its definite shape.

2,2 Ice cubes in a glass show water in which state of matter… Solid

2,3 What happens to water when heat is added? It evaporates.

2,4 John left a glass of iced tea on the table for several hours. When he came back, he noticed there were drops of water on the outside of his glass. Explain why this happened. There is water vapor in the air. So when the cold liquid meets with the water vapor (a gas), it cools and condenses forming the beads of water on the outside of the glass.

3,1 Why does a liquid have the same shape as its container? When the particles in a liquid move, they bump into the walls of their container. The solid walls of the container don’t change shape. The particles stay close together. So, the liquid takes the shape of its container.

3,2 What are some locations where the water cycle takes place? a. Evaporation, lakes, oceans, valleys. b. Plants, animals, lakes, and oceans. c. Underwater, swimming pools, condensations. d. Precipitation, condensation, evaporation, runoff. B. plants, animals, lakes, oceans

3,3 A student places a grape and a pumpkin in a tub of water. The grape sinks and the pumpkin floats. What does this tell the student about the density of each object? This shows that the grape is more dense than the water so it sinks. The pumpkin is less dense than the water so it will float.

3,4 How does the movement of particles in a substance change as it nears the freezing point? The particles move very fast when it reaches the boiling point. The particles slow down when it reaches the freezing point.

4,1 How can matter be changed from a liquid to a solid? Matter can be changed from a liquid to a solid by removing heat (ex. freezing water=ice).

4,2 Mary got a glass of ice cold lemonade. Her father tells her to come in the living room, so Mary sets her glass on the table. When she returns, she sees drops of water on the outside of her glass. What part of the water cycle does this represent? Condensation

4,3 Sometimes after it rains, you might notice rainbow streaks on the puddles on a road. Motor oil from cars floating on the water causes the streaks. Explain why the oil floats on the water. The oil is less dense than the water, causing it to float on the top of the puddle.

4,4 Yesterday when it rained there was a large puddle of water on the playground. Several days later the puddle had disappeared. Explain what happened to the water. The Sun caused the water to evaporate into the air and changed it from a liquid to a gas.

5,1 At what temperature does water change from a liquid to a gas? 100° C

5,2 What is the freezing point of water? 0° C

5,3 Identify which one of the following is a testable question: Does heat make water evaporate faster? Why does water evaporate? How long does it take water to evaporate? Why does cold water evaporate faster? Does heat make water evaporate faster? WHY or HOW are typically not testable. They are research type questions.

5,4 What is the name of the process when a liquid becomes a solid? freezing
