Activate Prior Knowledge  Think about a very large city that you know. What facts can you share about that city?  What information can you share about a small community?  What have you read or heard people say about why they live in a big city or a small town?

Ask and Answer Questions Questions A Community Like Mine Answers Page 19 Why do people work for free? I know that some people volunteer because they are making a difference by helping people. I can put together what I know with the text on this page and infer that people work for free because they want to help others. Page 20 What might happen to goods like desks? Biography of Mr. Henderson Mr. Henderson is the maintenance man at our school. He is also a father and a baseball coach. He is special because he helps kids in our community. Mr. Henderson was born in He played Little League baseball for seven years from 1964 to Then he was the catcher on his high school baseball team. In 1980 Mr. Henderson became the maintenance man at our school and has been working here ever since. In 1985 he helped put out a fire in the cafeteria. In 1988 Mr. Henderson started coaching baseball. He has had a winning team for 15 years.

Friend Biography Stephanie was born on February 13 th, She is ten years old. Stephanie was born in Texas and moved to Pennsylvania when she was four. There are five people in Stephanie’s family. Along with her mom and dad, she has two brothers and one sister. Their names are Jake, Joseph, and Sarah. Gymnastics is Stephanie’s favorite past time. She has been doing it for three years. The name of her gym is Parkettes and she practices two days a week. Stephanie attends school in Emmaus. Her favorite part of school is math, she likes to solve problems. When she grows up she wants to be a math teacher.
