Presentation transcript:

PROVEN effective 787 employees of Kaiser Permanente of Northern California mean age: 44 years 37% non-white Unlike other web based programs … Alive! has been proven effective, in a CDC-funded clinical trial

Results of the Trial Alive! participants improved significantly more than Control group More minutes of Moderate Activity, p= Increased Fruit/Vegetable intake, p=0.03 Lower Saturated Fat and trans fats intake, p=0.02 Improved reported Quality of Life, p=0.03 Note: a p-value less than.05 means that it is not likely to be due to chance

Large Changes Were Seen Saturated fat – Decreased 3.95 grams/day Moderate physical activity – Increased 46 minutes/week Trans fats – Decreased 1.49 grams/day These were the results among people aged 50+ who needed improvement

Lasting Changes Significant differences between the intervention and control groups were still observed 4 months after the intervention ended.

Alive participants had a significant improvement in standard measures of quality of life (SF8 Physical, SF8 Mental, Self-Assessed Health Status) Possible reasons for improved quality of life: Improved nutrition and physical activity Improved self-confidence, because weekly goals were easily achievable and tailored to their own lives Improved Quality of Life

“The weekly s kept things fresh and helped encourage me to stick to my goals without making me feel guilty if I didn’t do ‘everything’ -- very realistic and helpful.” “It helped keep the goals I had set for myself on my radar screen.” “The program felt supportive and not judgmental.” “Multiple choice (recommendations) for activities per week; 'test-it-out' resources after making weekly goals; timely reminders; the whole concept actually.” “I didn't have to go to the gym and be embarrassed at being fat around all the skinny people.” “Great ideas about how to increase my activity during a busy day. Good tips for things to do at work” What Participants Said They Most Liked About Alive (1)

“It helped me see that I can still eat some of the foods I like, but look at labels to find a better choice.” “The weekly reminder caused me to pay more attention to myself and not all the other things occupying my mind.” “When I'm busy, I tend to forget about things. The Project Alive s were instrumental in keeping me on track with my health goals.” “Encouragement to watch less TV -- I've cut way down.” “The constant prodding to move more” “I liked suggestions for increasing activity and the ability for me to select the activity.” “It is upbeat and pretty.” “It let me know a lot about me, that I probably wouldn't find out if not for this program. THANK YOU.” What Participants Said They Most Liked About Alive (2)

Why Another Trial? We want to test the effect of additional features Automated telephone coaching Additional printed materials A larger sample of people aged 50+ is needed
