Who Comes to English class? Que viene a la clase de Inglés? Students who have immigrated from another country or are born here Students whose native language is not English Students who don’t speak or understand English or are still learning English and need help 你好 Los estudiantes que han inmigrado de otro país o son nacidos aquí Los estudiantes cuyo idioma materno no es el Inglés Los estudiantes que no hablan o entienden Inglés o todavía están aprendiendo Inglés y necesita ayuda

Help with social language …. Help with academic language…. Use everyday and everywhere Can ask and answer easy questions Use it with family and friends Learned within 2 years Use in the classroom Use when studying/doing homework Vocabulary in school (math, science, history, art, music) Learned within 5 to 7 years What Kind of Help do students get?

What Do Students Do?

Conversational Speaking Students role play different stories to practice speaking loudly and clearly.

Speaking about classroom subjects (English, Social Studies, Math & Science) Students practice asking and answering questions with a partner. They also have opportunities to interview special guests at tea parties.

Speaking with Academic Language Older students create posters or write reports and present in front of their classes

Reading Students read for purpose and pleasure

Writing Students write and illustrate for a variety of purposes.

NYSITELL - New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners NYSESLAT - New York State English as a Second Language Test Given when they enter our school Given 1 time only Takes minutes to complete Tests how much English your child understands Tells if your child needs our ENL class Tells how much help they need Given in May every year Given over 4 days (speaking, listening, reading, and writing tests) Takes 30 minutes or more to complete For students in ENL class Tests how much progress your child has made in learning English Tells if they need ENL support in the future and how much How do we know how much help they need?

Testing Accommodations for ELL’s Extra time for tests Can take the test in a different classroom Can use a bilingual dictionary Can have NYS tests (math, science, and history) in their home language if available

What Can You Do at Home? Use your native language (Spanish, Chinese, etc.) Read to or with your child Ask your child questions about what they read (who, what, when, where, why) Provide a quiet place with good light for your child to do their homework Allow for outdoor play +45 minutes every day Play dates- provide opportunities for your child to play with other English speaking children afterschool
