Laboratory Equipment and its Usage

Safety Glasses and goggles: Use to protect your eyes Safety Glasses and goggles: Use to protect your eyes. MUST be worn at ALL times in the lab ONLY taken off when instructed!!!!!!!

Electronic Balance: Used to measure the mass of a solid. NOTE: 1 Electronic Balance: Used to measure the mass of a solid. NOTE: 1. NEVER mass a solid chemical directly on the pan. ALWAYS use weighting paper. 2. ONLY mass solids you are instructed to mass. 3. DO NOT move. 4. $483

Beaker: Used to mix and heat solutions and mixtures Beaker: Used to mix and heat solutions and mixtures. It is graduated but is only used for general volumes measurements. Can use with a stirring rod to pour. MUST marked with Pyrex, TEKK or Bomex to be heated.

Erlenmeyer Flask: Used to heat and mix solutions and mixtures Erlenmeyer Flask: Used to heat and mix solutions and mixtures. It is graduated but is only used for general volume measurements.

Graduated Cylinders: Used for measure accurate volumes Graduated Cylinders: Used for measure accurate volumes. Volumes are measured at eye level and looking at the meniscus.

Funnel: Used to direct flow to transfer liquids from one vessel to another. Funnels are also used in the process called filtration that separate solids from liquids. NOTE: the funnels are plastic and will melt with heat.

Test tubes: Used to heat and mix solutions Test tubes: Used to heat and mix solutions. MUST be tempered glass (Pyrex, TEKK, Bomax, Kimax) to be used in the lab!!!!!!! Test Tube Rack: Used to hold test tubes. Test Tube Clamp: holds test tube while heating

Bunsen Burner: Used to heat solutions. outer cone: 600oF Bunsen Burner: Used to heat solutions outer cone: 600oF middle cone: HOTTEST 1200oF inner cone: 800oF

Flint Spark Lighter: Used to light the Bunsen burner

Evaporating Dish: Used to heat solids and drive off any moisture.

Ring Stand and Ring: Used to support equipment while heating in the lab. Wire Glaze: supports a beaker and spreads the flame evenly. Funnels Clay Triangle: Used to support a crucible

Crucible with lid: Used to heat a solid to a very high temperature.

Watch Glass: Used to cover the crucible so that you can ‘watch’ the solid. MUST be Pyrex

Stirring Rod: Used to stir a solution and to direct flow of a liquid.

Wash Bottle: Used to rinse out solid that may stick to the side of the beaker when a precipitate forms between two solutions.

Well Plates: Used to mix solutions

Thermometer: Used to measure the temperature of a solution or mixture.

Dropper Pipets: Used to transfer small volumes of a liquid.

Hot Mitts: Used to handle hot glassware Hot Mitts: Used to handle hot glassware. Remember hot glass and cool glass look alike.

Water Bath Set-up: Used to heat or raise the temperature of a substance to the temperature of water.

Titration Set-up: Used in a titration Titration Set-up: Used in a titration. A titration is a procedure used to determine the concentration of a solution, usually an acid or base.

Filtration Set-up: Used to separate a liquid from a solid Filtration Set-up: Used to separate a liquid from a solid. Place the tip of the funnel along the edge of the beaker to prevent splashing.
