4.6 Congruence in Right Triangles In a right triangle: – The side opposite the right angle is called the hypotenuse. It is the longest side of the triangle. – The other two sides are called legs. LEG HYPOTENUSE
Hypotenuse-Leg (HL) Theorem If the hypotenuse and a leg of a right triangle are congruent to the hypotenuse and leg of another triangle, then the triangles are congruent.
Conditions for HL To use the HL theorem, the right triangles must meet three conditions: – There are two right triangles. – The triangles have congruent hypotenuses. – There is one pair of congruent legs.
