LEAF 03 March Optical Fibre Services for Experiments Luit Koert de Jonge/TS-EL-OF

LEAF 03 March TS/EL/OF-section u 3 CERN staff u 20 years of experience with optical fibres (from LEP days) u B1201-Optical Fibre Supply and Installation Contract u supply, installation, testing and commissioning of optical fibre cabling systems u any optical cabling solution possible u blanket purchase contract of 12’150’000 Sfr. TS/EL/OF Optical Fibre Services

LEAF 03 March CMS ALICE LHC-b ATLAS TS/EL/OF is in charge of a dense optical network for: Communications Controls Timing and RF Beam-Instrumentation External optical links ALICE CMS LHC-b CCC 513

LEAF 03 March P4 RF and TTC + BST optical cabling temperature compensated fibres still under study CCC

LEAF 03 March Overall fibre activity TS/EL/OF Optical Fibre Services B1201/TS/LHC blanket purchase contract with room for the Experiments 12’150’000 Sfr. LHC WU and EVM unplanned works small projects Experiments LHC unplanned works/small projects 8 MSfr. Experiments 4 MSfr. Experiments 4 MSfr. More complex than LHC -more cables -more connectors -complex environment -many users to interface to Work can be done, but TS/EL/OF can only manage so much!

LEAF 03 March What an Experiment gets from us: u professional advice, supplies and installations u customized and engineering solutions u 2 year warranty on the installations u operational service with specialized instrumentation but: u good supplies and work have a price! u it needs to be well organized, planned and managed u last minute jobs are possible, but should not be the usual way of working TS/EL/OF Optical Fibre Services

LEAF 03 March OF projects for the Experiments u ALICE u Detector optical cabling u Data and Trigger cabling u CMS u Muon end cap optical cabling u Data cabling u LHC-b u Long distance multi-ribbon optical cabling u Data cabling TS/EL/OF Optical Fibre Services

LEAF 03 March TS/EL/OF Optical Fibre Services ALICE backframe optical ducting

LEAF 03 March Optical patch-cords, cables, connections u A large variety of patch-cords and cables exist in the contract (already over 200) u Any optical patch-cord or cable can be supplied u Above items are not in CERN store! u Quality of optical connections is difficult to check and should be left to professionals! u TS/EL/OF is equipped for and capable of performing this work TS/EL/OF Optical Fibre Services

LEAF 03 March TS/EL/OF Optical Fibre Services To summarize u TS-EL-OF and the B1201/TS/LHC contract provide a professional service to the experiments. u The Experiments can make use of the blanket purchase and installation contract: u blanket envelope 4 MSfr. u project(s) need to be defined, budgetized and planned u combined workload is more than can be managed by the available staff u since the part done for the experiment is far more complex than the LHC part, we consider it reasonable to request support from the PH department
