Presentation transcript:

Morality in the Modern World Morality is about what we as people think are right or wrong things to do. Every society has its morality. There can be small differences. Some things that you and I think of as wrong may not be thought of as wrong in another culture. We also may have differing opinions on some issues. In this topic you will think about the rights and wrongs of the modern issues of: Human Embryo Research Designing Babies. Human Cloning

Embryo research I want you to understand why human embryos are used in scientific research. I hope you will be able to: Explain what a human embryo is. Give reasons why scientists are interested in using human embryos in research. State what the law says about this research Explain why some people are for and some against embryo research.

Embryo Research I want you to you to think about when a human foetus / embryo should be considered a human person and if human embryo experiments should be allowed. I hope you will be able to: State when you think a human foetus / embryo should be regarded as a person. State the views of most Christians on this topic. State with at least one reason what your view is on embryo research.

Genetic Engineering I want you to understand what is meant by genetic engineering and why it is carried out. I hope you will be able to: Explain the function of genes. Give examples of things we might genetically inherit. Explain what is meant by ‘genetic engineering’. Explain the phrase designer babies.

Designer Babies I am looking for you to understand why some people are against genetic engineering and the designing of babies I hope you will be able to: Briefly outline the story in the film you watched. State some advantages of genetic engineering Give at least one reason why some people are against it. State your own reasoned opinion on the issue.

Human Cloning I would like you to understand how and why scientists wish to clone a human. I hope you will be able to Explain how and why scientists carry out human cloning. Give your opinion on a couple of case studies involving cloning.

Human Cloning I am looking for you to understand the benefits and dangers of human cloning, and for you to decide if it is ever right to clone a human. I hope you will be able to: Give examples of the benefits and dangers of human cloning. Explain why some people may be against human cloning for religious reasons. State your own reasoned opinion on the issue.
