Professional educators interact with colleagues, families, the community, and in professional organizations to promote student achievement. Students rarely observe teachers in these activities, yet these activities are important to enhancing student achievement.

 Teachers fulfill key assignments in school and district projects.  They assume their share of duties that help school function smoothly.  They are generous with their expertise and willing to share materials and insights.  They collaborate on major projects that require considerable investment of time and energy.

 Attending committee meetings  Helping with play rehearsals  Organizing family math nights  Serving on site councils  Mentoring other teachers  Working on restructuring committees

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has designated the roles assumed outside the classroom as evidence of “true professionalism.” To meet the NBPTS standard, the service must provide evidence of benefiting students’ learning.

Teachers generally begin serving outside of their classroom after they have a few years of experience, after they have begun to master classroom management and instruction.

1. Team Building 2. Project Management 3. Designing and Delivering Staff Development 4. Researching 5. Public Relations 6. Visioning 7. Programs and School Evaluation 8. Facilitating Change 9. Networking and Partnership Building 10. Grant Writing and Seeking External Funding

 What is a teacher-leader? Why is it an important professional role?

 You will interview a teacher they admire about his or her professional role beyond the classroom.
