Genre Jump Objective: students show they understand different genres. Age approximation: grades 2-4 Materials needed: either mini game board (played with fingers instead of legs) or genre titles printed on cardstock and laminated- placed in a hopscotch formation. The basic game: –Either set up the mini board for each pair or a few sets of hopscotch games with one genre per page to jump on. –Put students into pairs. –Students must toss a coin/pebble, etc. to see how far they will go. They must explain the genre they land on. Ideas for enhancement: –You may want to make lasting board by gluing printed papers onto poster board. –You could require they get a book from that genre as well. –For experienced readers, you could have students name a book off the top of their head that they have read that matches that genre for a bonus.
