Certificate as “Living Thing”  Most certificates stay in effect long after issuance  Holder must continue to comply  Change over time is inevitable  FAA must approve changes PG 1-11

Definition of Approved Title 14 of the Code of Federal Aviation Regulations Part 1: Approved, unless used with reference to another person, means approved by the Administrator. Part 21 one vehicle to approve data

Changes in Airworthiness  Airworthiness certificate documents that the aircraft:  Conforms to approved design, and  Is in “condition for safe operation”  Certificate is valid if both are true PG 1-12

How can you tell when a part is Conforming ? Ask to look at the receiving documents What kind of packaging did it come in? Does it have an inspection stamp on it? Ask to look at the Certificate of Conformance (C of C) Ask to see the tags that came with the part Check the part marking (OEM’s may not have any) Parts manufacturing Approval (PMA) FAA/PMA Technical Standard Order (TSO) TSO C171

You are the one attesting to airworthiness Be Proactive your certificate is the one being exercised Know what you are working on, ask to read the log books, know what the TC data sheet says. If it doesn’t feel right, check it out ASK FOR HELP CALL-YOUR-PI

Standard Airworthiness Approvals The FAA has full responsibility for ensuring that each aircraft, at the time an airworthiness certificate is issued, conforms to the type design and is in a condition for safe operation.

Standard Airworthiness Approvals A Standard Airworthiness Certificate remains valid as long as maintenance, preventive maintenance, and alteration are performed in accordance with parts 21, 43, and 91.
