Evacuees What was evacuation? At the start of the Second World War, many children living in big cities and towns were moved temporarily from their homes to places considered safer, usually out in the countryside.
The black out When did The Blackout begin? Britain was blacked out on 1st September 1939, two days before the outbreak of war. What was The Blackout? During the war, everyone had to cover their windows and doors at night with heavy blackout curtains, cardboard or paint. Why did people have to cover their windows and doors? They needed to prevent any glimmer of light from escaping and aiding enemy aircraft during their bombing raids.
Children during the War What was it like for children in the Second World War? During the war life changed for everybody, including children. Some were evacuated to the countryside to escape the bombing. Children had labels attached to them, as though they were parcels. They often felt scared about being away from their families. Children often had to face long journeys by train.
