Chapter 4 Fractions, Decimals, and Percent.

Day 1

Vocabulary an equation that shows two ratios are equivalent. a number that represents part of a whole or part of a set. Percent - Proportion - Rational Number - Fraction - Decimal- Number Line - a representation of a real number using the base ten and decimal notation. a ratio that compares a number to 100. any number that can be written as a fraction. a line on which numbers are marked at intervals, used to illustrate simple numerical operations. Deposit-an amount added to an account or place. Discount- an amount subtracted from the original price. Ratio- Taxes- Tips- a comparison of two or more numbers. an amount of money added to a total bill. an amount of money given to a service provided as gratitude.

I Can…. Convert fractions, decimals, and percent using the standard algorithm.

Converting Numbers Essential Understanding: To convert a fraction to a decimal Simply divide the numerator by the denominator. Your answer will be a decimal. Thus, you will need to add a decimal and zeros to your dividend. Example: To convert a decimal to a percent Multiply the decimal by 100. Using your knowledge of the powers of ten, you can do this mentally by moving the decimal two place to the right. Example: To convert a percent to a decimal Divide the percent by 100. Using your knowledge of powers of ten, you can do this mentally by moving the decimal two places to the left. Example: To convert a decimal to a fraction You simply write it like you read it. Example:

I Can…. Calculate percent of a number using multiplication.

Finding the Percent of a Number Essential Understanding: You can use multiplication to find the percent of a number. This can be done by changing the percent to a decimal or a fraction, as they both represent the same ratio of part to whole. To find the percent of a number using decimals Example: To find the percent of a number using fractions. Example:

I Can…. Calculate percent of a number using proportional reasoning.

Percent of a Number Essential Understanding: You can calculate the percent of a number using proportional reasoning. As, a percent is a ratio per 100. Think converting numbers from percent to decimal to fraction. Example: You can use this knowledge to create equivalent proportions. Example: You can calculate the part in two ways Scaling- Example Cross Product/ One step Equations- Example:

I Can…. Calculate percent less than 1% and greater than 100%.

Percentages less than and greater than Essential Understandings: Occasionally, you will have percentages that are less than 1% or greater than 100% Percentages less than 1% represent a very small fraction Example: Percentages greater than 100% represent a mixed number. Meaning you have more than 1 whole piece or set. Example:
