Bone and Joint Injuries Describe injuries of the skeletal system Explain how injuries can be treated

X ray images  What parts of the body does the X ray show?  What structures can you see in the X ray that you cannot with your unaided eye?

Common Skeletal Injuries  Fractures- break in a bone, occurs when too much weight is applied to only a few bones

Common Skeletal Injuries  Dislocation- end of the bone come out of its joint  Can sometimes be relocated

Common Skeletal Injuries  Sprain  Ligaments are stretched too far and tear in places  Most common joint injuries

Identifying injuries  X rays- form of energy that travels in waves  Can determine whether bones are broken or not

Identifying Injuries  Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)  Takes clear images of both bones and soft tissues  Large machine that contains magnets  Very expensive  Doesn’t damage cells

Treating Injuries  Wear a cast

Joint replacement  Often used for arthritis- disease of the joints  When joints are injured, it can be replaced by artificial joint

Joint replacement  Arthroscopy  Arthoscope (slim tube-shaped instrument) is inserted into the joint attached to a camera  Allows for doctor to see if joint is damaged
