4.3 Comparing and Ordering Decimals

Homework

Mental Math Turn to your partner and take turns reading aloud the following decimals: 0.5 34.12 0.984 2.34 0.76 9.03 0.733 10.23 0.14 465.81 0.804 3.347

Solve Problem 1 on MJ page 82. Math Message Solve Problem 1 on MJ page 82.

How can we show that 0.3 > 0.15? Use base-10 blocks. If a is ONE, then 0.3 is 3/10 of the flat, or …and 0.15 is 15/100 of the flat, or 15 cubes. Because 3 longs are more than 15 cubes, 0.3 > 0.15. OR

How can we show that 0.3 > 0.15? Add the PHANTOM ZERO. Rename one of the decimals have the same number of digits to the right of the decimal point. We know that 0.3 = 0.30. Now 0.15 and 0.30 both have two places after the decimal point. Stack them on top of each other and compare. 0.30 0.15 Thirty is larger than fifteen, so 0.3 > 0.15

Complete MJ p 82. You can use base-10 blocks to help you, or you can use the phantom zero!
