Know mise-en-scene, the different shots regarding camera distance/angle/pan/tilt/zoom/etc, and their purpose(s). Be able to identify them by looking at a picture as well! These are also on your Film Glossary sheet.

Mise-en-scene From French, translates to “putting into the scene” All of the elements placed in front of the camera to be photographed: the settings the props, lighting, costumes and make-up, and figure behavior Director’s control over what happens in the film frame

The Shot: Camera Distance 1 Extreme Long Shot (ELS) Shows location Often used as an initial establishing shot in a sequence Long Shot (LS) Shows location/relationships The Godfather

The Shot: Camera Distance 2 Medium Long Shot (MLS) Shows location/ relationships Often used as an initial establishing shot in a sequence Medium Shot (MS) Waist up Focus on character(s) The Godfather

Track Track (dolly): camera on wheels. Can track in/out, left/right, slow/fast.

Zoom zoom lens can create illusion of camera moving in/out; can zoom in/out opening sequence of The Godfather uses computerized zoom out The Godfather

Focus Focus can be used expressively (e.g. deep focus shot at end where Kay moves close to camera and out-of-focus whilst Michael is literally – and – metaphorically focused) The Godfather
