Electrooptic Materials Based On Molecular Compasses And Gyroscopes: Effects Of Symmetry, Conjugation, And Correlated Dipolar Rotation Miguel A. Garcia-Garibay, University of California, Los Angeles, DMR Goals and Accomplishments: Prepare and characterize a new class of materials with functions based on controllable dynamic processes: Molecular compassess and gyroscopes —Crystalline assemblies have been designed with components that respond in the MHz to THz regimes. —Their rotary dynamics and interaction with external electric fields have been analyzed — Dielectric, electronic and photonic properties will be determined. —14 peer reviewed articles and 3 reviews published and over 40 invited lectures given. Rotary dynamics are determined by variable temperature solid-state NMR, inelastic neutron scattering, X-ray diffraction, etc. Determine dielectric properties directly (dielectric measurements) and spectroscopically (polarized optical measurements) Control rotary dynamics and orientation by changing the symmetry of the rotators
