Theme Wicked may be a play of entertainment, but is has many underlying themes. For example, it focuses on friendship and how deep platonic bonds can change a person. Glinda and Elphaba were an unlikely pair, but in the end, their friendship conquered the biggest of problems, thus bettering the whole community. Political turmoil and corruption also take the characters by storm. The play makes a statement about authority or esteemed figures, and how they are not always as wonderful and truthful as everyone thinks they are. In fact, the “winged monkeys” are used to symbolize politicians, poking fun at their intelligence. The Wizard is a symbol of dishonesty, exemplifying how he used lies to gain popularity as a political figure. Lastly, Glinda uses the image of “Good,” even though Elphaba was the one really behind the justice and powerful magic.
