Archeology What they do and How they do it.

Is this really Archaeology?

A. What is it?

Archaeologists use the scientific method to figure out what objects are that they find. They make a hypothesis (guess) as to what the item is.

 T T T They test their hypothesis. Compare it to pictures or drawings from culture. Compare it to descriptions in writings from culture. Compare it to similar items in other cultures.

 D D D Draw conclusions. Their hypothesis was correct. Their hypothesis was incorrect. (Go back to step 1)

B. Errors They Make

1. I ncorrect dating. Too old. Too young Reasons: –S–S–S–Site contamination. –W–W–W–Wrong method.

2. I ncorrect use. Conclusions from other cultures. L Location, Location, Location incorrect. D Dual use items.

3.I ncorrect culture. Trading. Discovery. Unknown circumstances.

3.G eneral Ethnocentrism – The belief that everything should function in other cultures like it does in ours. Chronocentrism – The belief that everything should function in other time periods like it does in our time period.
