Phobias

Treatment: Flooding A psychologist would put a person in a situation where they would face their phobia at its worst. – Use of relaxation techniques in addition to exposure. ADVANTAGES – Quick and often efficient DISADVANTAGES – Can be traumatic! – Chance of fear spontaneously reappearing – Less efficient than systematic desensitization.

Systematic Desensitization Read the packet and answer the following questions. 1.Define Systematic Desensitization 2.Define Hierarchy of Fears With a partner: 1.DRAW a phobia like a cartoon strip! Choose a phobia from the Fear Not packet. Your drawing must include: a.The phobia b.Systematic desensitization (this has TWO parts! I should see the hierarchy of fears + relaxation). You must illustrate each step! c.Outcome of treatment (Success?) 2.Explain how systematic desensitization uses BOTH Behaviorist and Cognitive perspectives on the back of your paper. You need to apply your knowledge about Behaviorism and Cognitive Psychology to answer this, it’s not straight from the reading!
