CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Quality, Standards and Accreditation Faculty of Business & Law Staff Induction (February 2015) Assurance of Learning (AoL)

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B What are we assuring? Our promise of what the course provides….. Learning outcomes Standards (e.g. AQF, discipline, etc)

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Assurance of Learning (AoL) is focussed on COURSES (not units) and providing evidence of the achievement of learning outcomes by our students; is an ONGOING process; involves making our expectations EXPLICIT, setting criteria and standards; systematically gathers, analyses and interprets the EVIDENCE to determine how well performance matches expectations.

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Evidence of AoL Evidence to substantiate AoL should be direct. It is embedded within the course and derived directly for assessment of the learning outcomes. Indirect measures (such as eValuate, exit / alumni surveys, placement reports, etc.) can only be provided in support of AoL. In themselves they do not provide AoL

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Learning – normal business practice How will you/ students know if they can do it? Has it been effective? What can be improved? What do the students need to do to learn? What should the students be able to do/ know? Learning Outcomes Learning Activities AssessmentEvaluation

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes (GLOs) Communication Digital Literacy Critical Thinking Problem Solving Self- management Teamwork Global Citizenship Knowledge and capabilities

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Constructive alignment of courses GLOs (8) CLOs (8) Professional standards AQF level Scaffolding of GLOs / CLOs all performance criteria covered Alignment of unit assessment with GLOs (evidence) – avge 3-5 per unit

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Accounting major – mapping based on current (T3, 2014) unit guides

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B AoL findings – example a)Feedback from one (postgraduate) unit chair - “there is an insufficient standard of English language proficiency among some of the international students”; this is an anecdote encountered reasonably often. b)In same trimester, English language was measured for AoL (GLO2 Communication) in 25 separate criteria from units in same/similar course. Criteria included: “written presentation”, “English proficiency”, “executive summary”, “spelling and grammar”. c)In 21 (of the 25) criteria, at least 85% of students met or exceeded the expected standard (for 14 of these the level was at 95% or above). d)Questions: (i) were the criteria and/or expected levels at the right standard? (ii) if yes, how do we reconcile the comment in (a) with the results?

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Reflections on our assessment

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Reflections on our approach

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Trust me, I’ve been doing it for years……. But do we know what we don’t know….?
