Learning Objectives By the end of the lesson, you should be able to… LO1) Identify the three industry sectors (Gui) LO2) Describe each industry sector based on what they do (Gui-Reg) (P3) LO3) Compare areas of growth and decline between each industry sector (Reg-Str) (M2).

Have a think… Identify each type of business. State what is happening in each picture. = 5mins

What do we understand by the term ‘industry’? “A group of businesses that offer the same or similar products”. Example: Retail Banking Industry Lloyds HSBC NatWest Barclays

Industry Sectors Industries can be classified into three main sectors: - Primary - Secondary - Tertiary

Primary Sector Industries that are involved in obtaining raw materials/natural resources from the earth. These may include farming, fishing and forestry.

Primary Sector Also include ‘extractive industries’ as they extract natural resources from the earth such as… …coal mining, quarrying and drilling for oil.

Secondary Sector Once raw materials have been extracted by primary sector industries, secondary industries are involved in the second stage of the production process. Involves taking the raw materials and turning them into finished/semi-finished products. Example: car manufacturing, oil refinery turning oil into petrol, using timber to build houses.

Tertiary Sector Provides a service to businesses and consumers. Often referred to as ‘Service Sector’ Examples include banking industry, hotel industry, retail industry & communications industry.

MINI-TASK Identify which sector the following belong to and why you would classify it in that sector: A beauty salon A taxi firm A slate quarry A bakery A salmon farm in Scotland Tesco Plc ‘Heat’ magazine South Staffs Water Plc A TV company such as Sky TV A vegetable canning business An oil refinery A housebuilding company such as Barrett Homes (5mins)
