+ Revision and Editing for The Giver Revision= to see again in a new way.

+ Step 1 – Analyze the model 1. Open up the Essay Overview directions from my website – in Notability. 2. Read the model paragraph. 3. Highlight and number the specific references made to each specific part of the book. 4. Label each of these as a HOTS or LOTS connection.

+ Step 2 – Analyze YOUR body paragraphs. 1. Highlight each specific reference you make to the book. 2. Label each connection as HOTS or LOTS. 3. Underline your ICE quote. 4. Ensure that your ICE quote: 1. Has background information. 2. Includes as smooth introduction. 3. Is punctuated correctly. 5. Write notes to yourself regarding necessary changes on your paper. 6. Repeat with your second body paragraph.

+ Step 3 – Analyze your structure 1. Use the yellow checklist as a guide for analyzing the structure of your writing. 2. Give yourself an honest score. 3. Include notes to yourself regarding changes you want to make in your work. AT THIS TIME, PELASE SKIP ANY BOX THAT SAYS “USES CORRECT CONVENTIONS.”

+ STEP 4 - MAKE REVISIONS 1. Use the notes you’ve made to revise your paper. 2. Print off a NEW DRAFT (ROUGH DRAFT #2) and bring it with you on Friday, Feb 6 th.

+ Step 5 – editing- Compound sentences 1. Read your work all the way through. 2. Highlight the following words: and, but, for, or, so, yet. 3. Re-read the sentences that contain these words. 1. Are they compound sentences? 2. Are they punctuated correctly? 4. Read your work again. Do you see any place where you have a run-on sentence (2 sentences smooshed together that need one of these words?

+ Step 6 – editing- Complex sentences 1. Read your work all the way through. 1. Highlight the following words: because, although, while, when, whenever. 1. Re-read the sentences that contain these words. 1. Are they complex sentences? 2. Are they punctuated correctly?

+ Step 7 – editing-spelling and caps 1. Read your work all the way through. 1. Look for words that may be spelled incorrectly. (Remember, the most common spelling errors are ones in which you write a word different from what you intended....think “on” and “one.”) 2. Ensure that all names (Jonas, The Giver,), titles, and first words of sentences are capitalized.

+ Step 8 – Flow and fluency 1. Upload your paper into “Notability.” 2. Using the microphone button on the top of your screen, record yourself reading your paper. 3. Be sure that you are reading your work AS IT IS WRITTEN, not as you hope that it sounds. 4. Listen to your paper, reading along as you hear yourself speak. Highlight any sentences that seem awkward or that need to be rephrased.

+ Step -9 Turning your paper in 1. Make all corrections found in your editing steps. 2. Ensure that you have double-spaced your work and written in 11 or 12 point font. 3. Share your final document via google drive. 4. Staple rough draft 1, rough draft 2, and the rubric together. 5. Turn in to the basket in the back of the room. 6. CELEBRATE!!! YOU ARE FINISHED.
