Characteristics of the Victorian Period They focused on Realism Many people didn't like the romanticized version of society There work is more serious subjects such as religion, education, nature, child labor, and reform

Dover Beach By: Matthew Arnold This poem starts of in the calm setting of the sea, then turns into a depression It shows the realism of life and how struggles are barriers that you have to overcome. He uses the sea as and example of how at one point everything is calm then at any moment everything is disrupted.

Dover Beach (cont..) Emotion plays a big role in this period because it show how people really feel, to help express the Realism in his poem. Ignorance is used to show the good and bad in poem The setting which was at night also helps show that night time is suppose to be peaceful but in reality the worst things can happen at night

Matthew Arnold Arnolds work mainly consisted of the struggles during the Victorian period His work attacked the working class, and also talked about the upper class Also his writing resembled elegy’s to help show realism and the true meaning of life
