What is a herb? "A herb is any plant where the leaves, seeds or flowers are used for medicine, flavour or scent" definition according to Concise Oxford Dictionary. Overview Herbs and spices have long been used as a component of daily food to make them more delicious and tasty. However they also come up with many un-expected health benefits. In one way or other, herbs are helpful in our daily lives as they provide major density of nutrients, minerals and vitamins that helps body fight against diseases. Many people find them handy as a simple home remedies from curing high blood pressure to treating cold, cough and infections due to their anti-oxidant and anti- inflammatory properties.

Benefits of herbs and spices their healing properties Knowing the effective medicinal properties of food and their potential health benefits, pharmaceutical companies are now using them in making medicine associated with lowering of blood pressure, reducing bad cholesterol level, regulation of blood sugar and in several antibiotics and pain killers. Lets have a look at some of the most effective functions of herbs.

Anti-cancer properties Flavonoids are the type of nutrients present abundantly in plants and herbs that can help body prevent cancer. They posses the property to help Vitamin C as an antioxidant (substances that fight against free radicals and stop their production in the body). Some herbs also contains phytochemical substances called terpenoids which are also potent anti-oxidants, thought to inhibit the growth of benign and malignant tumours.
