American History 5/16/2003 Gold rush Fate of Native Americans

1849 Gold Rush started In California In Nevada, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Dakota

1862 The Homestead Act This law offered free farms in the West to settlers. The land became theirs after 5 years.

Fate of Native Americans Native Americans had been pushed inward from both coasts by Manifest Destiny, the California and Colorado gold rushes, the homestead act in the middle of 19 th century.

1876 Custer ’ s Last Stand Led by Sitting Bull of the Sioux, the Sioux destroyed Custer ’ s force.

Last Words of Crazy Horse We had buffalo for food, and their hides for clothing and for our teepees. We preferred hunting to a life of idleness on the reservation, where we were driven against out will. At times we did not get enough to eat and we were not allowed to leave the reservation to hunt.

Crazy Horse (1877) We preferred out own way of living. We were not expense to the government. All we wanted was peace and to be left alone. Soldiers were sent out in the winter, who destroyed our village.

1890 Incident at Wounded Knee, South Dakota More than 450 native Americans were shot to death. Native American's “ last stand. ”
