Environmental Sustainability Application Fyans Park Primary School Created by Fyans Park Green Team

Introduction Fyans Park Primary School is located at 37 Cook Street in Newtown. 306 students currently attend, ranging from Prep to grade 6. We thrive to involve students in helping our school become more environmentally friendly. We have made a lot of achievements as a school, for example, we removed of a freezer that was costing us over $800 per year and replaced it with a fridge freezer (shown below) that will help us save lots more money. Also at Fyans Park we have started a ‘Green Team’ (students also shown below) that has helping us achieve our goal to become a 5 star school. Recently we were awarded our very 1st Environmental star.

Student Involvement Fyans Park Primary School students are involved in processes of planning and creating our school bank, tree planting system. Each year our students participate in ‘National Tree Day’, planting Indigenous plants along our school bank. Starting in 2011 students have yearly been planting one indigenous seedling each along our beautiful oval bank. This year we have finally finished planting along our oval bank, making it look complete and very well presented.

Parental, Teacher and community involvement The teachers, parents and the local community, provide mulch to help the garden. Monthly, parents are invited to work on our gardens, making our school clean and ready for upcoming events. Working bees (as we call them) are not only for the teachers, parents and local community, students are also welcome to come along and help their school look spick and span.With this, our school is regularly clean, so there is a clean, happy environment for students and teachers and others to use and enjoy. Most Fridays (unless wet) at lunch time students from interchanging house teams, help clean up the school by picking up rubbish for 15 minutes. If a single piece of paper is found the house team that was picking up the rubbish on that particular day, is removed of 50 points per piece of rubbish that the teacher on the next round of yard duty finds.

Our use for our beautiful school bank is for ‘National Tree Planting Day’. Yearly, students at Fyans Park Primary School, as a collective we all get together and plant an indigenous seedling each with the grade 5/6’s helping younger grades. General Appearance and Use

Special Features Some of our special features include a water tank, a veggie patch, student artwork displays and the tree planting on the bank. We enjoy admiring the great work that we put in. The students help put up the artwork and care for the veggie garden.

New Developments Our school has recently re-developed our school vegetable garden adding more nutrients to our soil and adding more reasons for our students to get out and about.

Ground Facilities Our students have many great facilities to play physical activity while also having fun. We really appreciate this opportunity to showcase our school to the broader community, in the hope that it will be considered for this award. We have so much area here at Fyans Park which we enjoy every day. We are learning how to manage our grounds better in the hope that the changes we make here at school can educate us for the future.
