Presentation transcript:

2nd Grade Curriculum This presentation will be used for Meet the Teacher Night. It will be a formal presentation for the teacher to present to the parents to explain what it is that their child will be learning during the second grade school year. This slideshow clearly explains what it is that will be taught in detail, going over specific subjects such as breaking down the math concepts into the different individual topics. This will be shown to parents to encourage the school-home connection. Parents are often too busy these days to sit down with their children and work on things like addition facts or to read them stories. This will give parents an idea of what it is that they could be working on at home as well. Because this presentation is geared to inform parents of what is being taught and asking for their help at home, it will aid in improving student achievement because students will be getting more practice and help from informed parents.

Reading We will be practicing our reading skills in a variety of ways. Whole class Small group (4-6 students) guided reading at own reading level Reading centers You can help your child become a better reading by listening to them read at home. I encourage students to read to their parents at least 15 minutes a day. Discuss the idea of Anna Plan and how it helps children to achieve by having them in reading groups that can be changed bi-weekly to accommodate for student growth.

Writing We will be using the writing process in the classroom when doing teacher-assigned papers and during writing workshop. The teacher will conduct mini-lessons to the whole group and then have the students practice the skill taught while the teacher conferences with individual students. The writing process includes: Prewriting/brainstorming Rough draft Revising/editing Final copy Publishing We will be using the writing workshop format. Students will be taught a mini lesson, such as writing grabber beginnings and then will be given time to work on their own grabber beginnings. At the end of writing time, there is sharing time as well.

Spelling We are using the Rebecca Sitton Spelling Program in our classroom. This focuses on long-term mastery instead of just studying for a weekly test. This program focuses on phonics skills. Students will be given 5 new words a week, plus a few words a week that students are expected to know by the end of 2nd grade. All words will be repeated sometime throughout the year so students can commit them to memory. A home activity will be sent with the students on Tuesday of each week. Please keep a list of words that your student may have missed on the weekly test so they can study them at home for future weeks. Talk about how the words are reviewed all throughout the Rebecca Sitton program and how students will not only be seeing these words this year, but also in future years as well.

Math Concepts to be covered this year: Time Money Addition and subtraction Help your child practice time by asking them to tell you what time it is by looking at an analog clock. Please have them practice their addition and subtraction facts as much as possible. It is so much easier for them to memorize them and recall, than having to resort to other methods like finger counting. Have your child play around with spare change and tell you how much they have.

Science Science will be learned through hands on experiments and supplemental information from a textbook. Science topics this year consist of the Earth, plants and matter.

Social Studies Second grade studies the local community in social studies. Instruction will be given by teacher-led reading from a text and class discussion. Unit tests will be given, with a study guide before hand so you can help you child study for the test. Additional worksheets may be sent home for homework. Social Studies units have changed for this year. Second graders are responsible for learning about the local community. We will be doing a service learning project for our school as well: recycling paper. This will improve the earth because we will be reducing the amount of paper being thrown away by our school, while teaching our students a valuable lesson about the community around them.
