Guided Math Channon Almendarez Better Together Workshop McRoberts Elementary November 9, 2012 Based upon data collected from the campus survey.

Agenda for November 9th Reflect from Tuesday’s Meeting What is Guided Math? Structure of Guided Math Teacher Roles Resources Planning Template Goal Setting

What is Guided Math? One component of a balanced mathematics program Students learn in small flexible groups based on instructional level Students work in appropriate standards- based workstations

Small Group Instruction-Defined The teacher works with a small group of students who have similar instructional needs. The teacher provides enough scaffolding, or support, to move the students to a high level of competence where they can work independently. When flexibly grouping students based on their strengths and needs, teachers can tailor their teaching to provide the specific instruction that best challenges all learners. Guided Math: A Framework for Mathematics Instruction by Laney Sammons

Guided Math vs. Whole Group Whole GroupData Collected Guided Math One standard Not differentiated One lesson After lesson, teacher monitors and helps 5-8 struggling kids independently Advanced kids speed through work and read when finished Not all kids have same understanding of different concepts Minimal discussion of thinking Not fully balanced instruction 17 out of approx. 23 Math Teachers Responded 17% Small Group Instruction is kind of effective 28% Small Group Instruction is effective 30% Small Group Instruction is highly effective One standard Differentiated Small group Based on need on individual standards (Daily formative assessment) One tiered lesson Groups are flexible, change frequently No student is ever “finished” Balanced instruction

Warm Up 5-10 Minutes Spiraling Review and Practice of the TEKS Mini-Lesson Minutes Whole group standards-based lesson Small Group 20 Minutes Standard Based Lessons Based on Pre- Assessments Conferencing, Collaboration, &/or Communication Collaborative problem- solving Tiered Lessons Summary (Most Important) 5-10 Minutes Review important concepts Reflect Teacher checks students’ work Total Time 60 Minutes

What does Guided Math look like? Includes: Students working with teacher in ability groups Teachers formally and informally assessing student progress Workstations and/or independent practice based on the standards A part of math instruction 3 or more days a week

Cycle of Implementing Small Group Instruction Data- Pretest/other Form/Assign Groups Prepare aligned workstations Tiering for small group instruction

How do I set up my groups? Pre-Assessment Group according to analysis of standards not necessarily total missed* Designed to have more than 2 groups Groups can/should change regularly based on student understanding

Guided Math Teachers... Set up standards-based workstations based on student need Lead whole group discussion about the workstations when they are changed out Develop a system for recording what the students are doing in the workstations

Teacher Roles when Preparing for Small Group Instruction Pre-assess/collect data Identify small groups based on skill needed Scaffolding questions Tiering a lesson Anchoring activities Classroom management Routines are the key to sanity Arrangement of the classroom Time allocation Scheduling Be persistent; don’t give up

How do I get started with workstations? Decide on workstations: TEKS Skills being taught Multiple intelligence Fluency building activity Be sure the workstations are authentic, standards-based activities and not “busy work” Create a planning system and a student log

Ideas for Workstations Technology: Smartboard, computer Standards-Based Games: card games, etc. Problem Solving: Exemplars Math Journals Fluency Building Activities: timed tests, flash cards, etc. Brainstorm some ideas under the “Workstation” flap on your foldable. Be ready to share!

Example of a To Do List… May Change Daily 1. Complete Math Warm-Up 2. (5 Problems) Roll the dice to create three digit numbers like our mini-lesson today and subtract them. Please feel free to use any of the strategies I have taught you. Add to check 3. Fact Fluency Game: Multiplication War (Multiplying by 10’s)

Summarizing the Lesson Math Journal Quick Writes Discussion Understanding Check: -thumps up, thumps down, etc. -Final Countdown, 3-2-1, Ticket out the Door, etc. Teacher must take the time to reflect on what went well/bad. Students must be allowed times to ask questions they may have had while you were in small group.

What Now? Decide on rules and routines Set up groups Create a schedule Develop accountability form Plan group and mini-lessons Design workstations Make a To Do List / Menu

Getting Started-Things to Consider How will I arrange my classroom? What rotation schedule will I use? What are my norms and procedures for small group instruction? What data pieces will I use to form my small groups? What resources will I use to create my workstations?

Guided Math Workstations Set up around the room on desks, tables, or bulletin boards (remember technology) Put in tubs and placed on students’ desks Based on concepts to maintain and/or concepts to learn To Do List

Partner Games 2. Exemplars 3. SmartBoard and hands on manipulatives 4. TLC Math Resources

Guided Math Students... Keep work in progress in a folder Keep a record of which workstation they complete daily along with any products in a workstation folder Are accountable for keeping up with workstation work, recording completed workstation daily, and producing quality work

Goal Setting Time Locke and Latham (1990) proposed that the key components are goal choice and commitment. Goal choice includes the goal people are trying to obtain and the level at which they are trying to attain it. What can we commit to as a group?

Is it Your Lucky Day?! If you have the word “Recess” written on the back of your foldable, you win “A Duty Free Recess covered by Susie”! If you have the words “Door Prize” written on the back of your foldable, you win a door prize!

Special Thanks To: Mrs. Canady for allowing me to present today. Susie Redditt for collaboratively planning with me. Teachers for working collaboratively and authentically to improve math instruction. Mayra Guzman for allowing me to video tape her lesson. Amanda Ruiz for video taping.
