FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Honor – Duty – Respect Factual Information Servant Leadership as a Professional While the traditional authoritarian leader asks, “What can the organization do for me?,” the servant leader asks, “What can I do for the organization?” The idea is that the leader who meets his/her subordinates’ needs can then concentrate on, and is empowered to pursue, the organization’s needs.

FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Honor – Duty – Respect Factual Information Impact on Leadership Hunter, J. C. (1998). The servant: A simple story about the true essence of leadership. New York: Crown Business. 4 (Hunter, 1998, p. 58)(Hunter, 1998, p. 62)

FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Honor – Duty – Respect Factual Information Servant Leadership as a Professional Given this leadership philosophy, how does a servant leader relate… to employees? to customers, stakeholders, or shareholders? What resources does a professional control that he can use to help those to whom he is responsible meet their legitimate needs?

FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Honor – Duty – Respect Applicability to Post-Graduation Life Vignette Directions View all of the vignettes on the next four slides Get into four groups according to your professional interests and the corresponding vignette (Teacher, Law Enforcement, Engineer, Business) Answer the discussion question and be prepared to present to the class 6

FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Honor – Duty – Respect Applicability to Post-Graduation Life Vignette Professional Teacher as Servant Leader You are teacher in a K-12 school district. You observe your students each day and plan appropriate curriculum to meet their needs. You see a child who is having difficulty paying attention, completing classwork, and sleeps during class time. Discuss: As a teacher, how can you use servant leadership to assist this child and caregiver? Describe your approach to this scenario. 7

Part of your job is to establish good relations with the children and adults who live there. Discuss: As a law enforcement officer, how can you use servant leadership to assist the people in this neighborhood? Describe your approach to this scenario. 8

FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Honor – Duty – Respect Applicability to Post-Graduation Life Vignette Engineer as Servant Leader You are a civil engineer who is working with a city planning division and community group to design changes to traffic patterns and create community greenspaces. FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Honor – Duty – Respect Applicability to Post-Graduation Life Vignette Business Person as Servant Leader You are a marketing manager at one location of a national company. You interface with product designers and company executives regularly regarding a new product’s design and launch. Sometimes the demands of each group do not match, but in the end, you need a product with the right features and price that will generate buzz in the market. Discuss: As a marketing manager, how can use servant leadership to assist all stakeholders? Describe your approach to this scenario. 10

FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Honor – Duty – Respect Applicability to Post-Graduation Life There are many leadership traits necessary for effective principled leadership in an organization. Servant Leadership is a style that wherein the leader places the primary interest on meeting the needs of the followers and gaining their trust and respect (Greenleaf, 1970). When leaders hold followers in high regard, the use of power and authority is unnecessary as followers will give the leader consent to lead (Greenleaf, 1970). Servant leaders should act in the best interest of their followers, always making valid attempts to assess and gain an understanding of their needs (Greenleaf, 1970). 11 Greenleaf, R.K. (1970). FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Honor – Duty – Respect 12 "The character that takes command in moments of crucial choices has already been determined by a thousand other choices made earlier in seemingly unimportant moments. It has been determined by all the 'little' choices of the past--by all those times when the voice of conscience was at war with the voice of temptation, [which was] whispering the lie that 'it really doesn't matter.' It has been determined by all the day-to-day decisions made when life seemed easy and crises seemed far away…” ~ President Ronald Reagan Reagan, R. W. (1993). The character that takes command.
