Unit 2a Entertaining a client Objective: To raise awareness of and practice techniques for encouraging To practice speaking about general topics in preparation for the Speaking Test To practice reading for specific information To practice listening for gist and specific information. Materials needed: Cassette – Pass Cambridge BEC Intermediate

Unit overview Choosing a restaurant Reading 1 Ss look at a customer satisfaction form and choose the three most important criteria for judging a good restaurant. Speaking Ss work in pairs and ask each other about the last restaurant they visited using the criteria from the form. Reading 2 Ss read an advertisement for Porters restaurant to find which criteria are mentioned.

Speaking Ss discuss the suitability of the restaurant for particular occasions Ss describe the most memorable restaurant they have been to. Making conversation Listening 1 Ss listen and match five short pieces where people talk about business trips with the questions the people answer (Listening Test Part Two Section One). Listening 2 Ss listen to an extended version of one of the conversations to identify techniques for encouraging conversation.

Language focus Ss focus on techniques and language for encouraging conversation. Speaking Ss extend utterances into longer dialogues using the techniques introduced. Ss play a board game in which they talk about different general and business topics (to develop skills related to Part One of the Speaking Test).

Unit 2b Corporate hospitality Objectives: To enable Ss to talk about corporate hospitality To Practice reading for gist and specific information To raise awareness of formal versus informal language in letters To review language for making and dealing with invitations To practice writing a letter of acceptance Materials needed: None

Unit Overview Mixing business with pleasure Speaking Ss read mini-profiles and choose suitable ways of entertaining corporate guests (Speaking Test Part Three). Reading 1 Ss scan an article about a course on business socializing to find ways of entertaining corporate guests. Ss match paragraph heading with paragraphs. Ss then match endings with sentence stems (Reading Test Part Three). Speaking Ss discuss the advantages and disadvantages of mixing business with pleasure.

Arranging a company visit Reading 2 Ss read a letter of invitation and decide what the invitation is for. Ss then read the letter again to answer true/false questions. Language focus Ss focus on the language of invitation: Inviting/offering/thanking/accepting/declini ng. Writing Ss write a letter of acceptance (writing Test Part Two).
