The Pilgrims spent 66 days aboard the Mayflower during their voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth aboard the Mayflower in 1620.

The Virginia Company paid the 102 colonists fare to sail on the Mayflower and in exchange the pilgrims were to send back furs, lumber, and fish to England. The ship was to land near the Hudson River, but was blown off course by a storm and landed at Plymouth Rock on December 21, 1620.

The pilgrims learned numerous things from the Wampanoag Indians about how to survive in this new land.

Decision Making and Resources The pilgrims had to make everything that they needed to survive as there were no supply ships to replenish their supplies. The first winter was extremely difficult; half of the 102 pilgrims died. In the spring, the Wampanoag Indians taught the Pilgrims where to hunt and fish and also how to plant different vegetables such as; squash, pumpkins, and corn. The pilgrims also began to trade with the Indians for items that both peoples needed.

The Indians helped the Pilgrims to survive by showing them where to hunt and fish

The Mayflower Contract : The pilgrims knew that they were not subject to the laws of the Virginia Company, as the ship had not landed near the Hudson River. The pilgrims were to settle on Virginia Company lands and since the Pilgrims were blown off course during a storm at sea; the pilgrims needed rules/laws to abide by in their new homeland. All of the pilgrims signed an agreement while still aboard the ship -which called for the good of the colony, and this was called the Mayflower Contract. This is the First Example of self-rule.

Equal “Just” Laws For The Common Good

Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a National Holiday in He proclaimed this day in November “as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father.

Courtesy, Honesty, Courage These were the words that the Plymouth Pilgrims expected of themselves and of others Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities

The Pilgrims lived in peace with the Indians for numerous years, until more colonists arrived and pushed the Indians off of their own land.

Distinct characteristics of Thanksgiving: Tradition of Prayer Feasting and Family Reunion Proclamation by Civil Authorities

A true thanksgiving for Pilgrims was a day of solemn prayer and fasting. The first Thanksgiving was actually a harvest festival. Then in the 1840’s, the “Cult of Domesticity” existed, which placed an emphasis on home life and the necessity of enforcing family virtues against the coarse masculine style and cutthroat business practices of the day. Holiday focused on home and hearth; civilized virtues that had been lost.

And now, let’s review a few of the main points from our lesson today on the “First Thanksgiving”

THE FIRST THANKSGIVING WAS CELEBRATED AT PLYMOUTH IN 1621

The Pilgrims celebrated their harvest, which would have not been possible without the help of their Indian neighbors. Most of us in modern times, gather with our friends and family to give thanks for the past year and enjoy eating lots of wonderful food.
