Positive & Systematic Supervision Allen at Steinbeck January 3, 2011 Staff Development Day

Goal Participants will be able to describe the six elements of Positive and Systematic Supervision.

Agenda Positive and Systematic Supervision PBIS Update

Goals of “Recess” Adults Students Safety, build relationships with students, know and notice youth, promote positive behaviors, have fun A days worth of play in 20 minutes, socialize with friends, let off steam, have fun, exercise

Systematic Supervision Movement Scanning Positive Contact Positive Reinforcement Responding to Problems Review Data and Work as a Team

Moving Movement : do not stand in one area and move constanly and randomly Scanning Scanning: watch and listen constantly; target appropriate and inappropriate behaviors

Moving and Scanning Task 1 – Think-Pair-Share “It is more advantageous to move and scan as opposed to being stationary and looking in one direction because…”

Moving and Scanning Video Segment

Positive Contact Specific by behavior Immediately deliverable Used at a consistently high rate 5:1 Task 2: brainstorm as many ways as you can to say “good job” to a student for exhibiting the appropriate behaviors listed. Positive Reinforcement

24 ways to say “Good Job” Way to goTerrific How smart Well doneNow you’ve got it Beautiful WorkAwesome Way to go DynamiteOutstanding Great try You brighten my day I appreciate that Super jobGive yourself a hand Fantastic jobPerfect Nice going Nice effortThank you Excellent Looking goodYou rock! Good idea

Responding To Problem Behaviors Immediate Specific to behavior Non-argumentative; non-critical Consistent

Two-Minute Rule When responding: Focus on behavior, not the problem Resolve it privately when possible When speaking with students: Be respectful Speak in a calm voice When students: Cooperate: acknowledge and reinforce Are not compliant: redirect and give choices for compliance

Video Segment Responding to Problems Task 3 As you watch video, think of one idea that you can take away

Teamwork/Referral Forms Help staff collect information and work as a staff Show how strategies are working, and guide discussion and planning Show who needs more support and which areas need more supervision

Rules Playground Rules = should align with our 3 behavior expectations. Discuss at your table and share with the room the one rule that is “broken” most often or the biggest challenge for your students.

Game Rules Establish the first problem solving step when there are disagreements.
