Modern Atomic Theory By: Patric DeStevens, Ian Tyger, Zack Richardson

Birth of the Modern Atomic Theory The modern atomic theory is said to begin with John Dalton. Dalton's work was mainly about the chemistry.

Development of The Modern Atomic Theory Then J. J. Thompson discovered that cathode rays were streams of negatively charged particles with a mass about 1,000 times smaller than a hydrogen atom. After that came Ernest Rutherford's experiments with alpha rays that led him to discover the atom as a small, heavy nucleus with electrons in orbit around it.

Development of The Modern Atomic Theory continued The next scientist is Niels Bohr. Bohr studied under both Rutherford and Thompson. He further refined the nuclear model by proposing that electrons moved only in restricted, successive orbital shells. Bohr's theory became the basis for quantum mechanics.

The Modern Atomic Theory Erwin Schrodinger developed the Modern Atomic Theory. He combined some particle behavior with some wave behavior. He formulated a derived equation which gives the probability of finding the electron at some point in a 3-D space at any given instant, but it gives no information about the path the electron follows.
