Childhood: Niels Bohr was son of Christian Bohr, Professor of Physiology at Copenhagen University, and his wife, Ellen née Adler. Bohr’s family life had a great impact on the development of his high intelligence in physics. Since his father was a renowned physiologist, he was mainly responsible for Bohr’s early interest in physics while still in school, and his mother came from a family distinguished in the field of education. He graduated with his Master’s degree in Physics in 1909 and his Doctor’s degree in 1911.

Bohr married Margrethe Nørlund in 1912 and had had six sons with her. Two of the boys died in childhood. The other four survived and had successful careers of their own. These four boys included: Hans Henrik (doctor), Erik (chemical engineer), Aage (Ph.D., theoretical physicist), and Ernest (lawyer).

1922-Won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his atomic structure 1957-Received the first U.S. Atoms for Peace Award He suggested that electrons can only travel in special orbits, at a certain discrete set of distances from the nucleus with specific energies. He also explained emission and absorption of radiation as transitions between stationary electronic states in which the electron orbits the nucleus at a definite.
