WORKS CITED How to have a FABULOUS English Paper

WHAT NOT TO DO…  NO WIKI-ANYTHING  NO ASK.COM  NO ABOUT.COM  NO WEBSITE THAT CAN BE EDITED IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM!!!!

PLAGIARISM Correct : “An act or instance of using or closely imitating the language or thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own without crediting the author.“ (“Plagiarism”). Incorrect: An act or instance of using or closely imitating the language or thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own without crediting the author.

PLAGIARISM  Plagiarism is serious.  In college, you can be expelled for not citing the works you used.  You can be taken to court.  is used by Foothill teachers. As you move into the upper grade levels, teachers use it regularly for term papers.  You WILL be caught.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM  Pull all your research articles  Highlight what you think is interesting or important to your paper  Rewrite in your own words OR use a direct quote. If it is someone else’s idea, you still have to cite it.  You can cite your quote in the lead-in, for example, “According to the article, “Plagiarism on the Rise” in the March, 2014 issues of Time magazine, 83% of students plagiarize at least one time in their life.

RIGHT AND WRONG WAYS TO DO IN-TEXT CITATIONS  In my opinion, the movie “Divergent” “is the latest dystopian sci- fi saga to make the leap from the printed page to the big screen has earned more than a few Hunger Games comparisons.  Right or wrong? Explain.

SUMMARIZING  You can also summarize the text by reading it and putting it into your own words.  The movie “Divergent” is a futuristic science fiction film which is a first cousin to the movie “The Hunger Games.” OR The science fiction film “Divergent” closely resembles the film “The Hunger Games.”
