Slide 4 of 9 Self-esteem means having a good opinion of yourself. It is based on understanding what your strengths are and valuing yourself as a person. Self-esteem is important because it enables you to have the confidence to be yourself. If you have self-esteem, you will say what you think and do what you think is right, rather than say or do things in order to try to impress other people. It will: make you feel happier help you respect yourself stop you blaming yourself when things go wrong give you the confidence to give things a go help you achieve more make it easier to deal with setbacks Self-esteem is NOT the same as conceit. A conceited person has an exaggerated opinion of themselves. A person with self-esteem has a balanced view of their own worth, valuing their good points, but understanding that like everyone else they are not perfect.
