Bellringer What is the Ashipu and Asu?

Answers Ashipu- The sorcerer that told magic spells to try to help people. Asu- A medicine man that used herbal healing.

Origination of Smallpox Smallpox originated about 10,000 in either Africa or Asia.

???????? How did large portions of the world get infected with the Smallpox virus?

Traveling the World The Smallpox disease spread rapidly throughout the world. People would contract the Smallpox disease and then pass it along by using trade routes.

Traveling The Smallpox disease has traveled throughout the world during times of war and peace. The outcome of the disease has been devastating. Entire cultures have been wiped out by the disease.

Viruses Cowpox-A mild contagious skin disease of cattle, usually affecting the udder that is caused by a virus and characterized by the eruption of a pustular rash. When the virus is transmitted to humans, as by vaccination, it can confer immunity to smallpox. Also called vaccinia.

Symptoms of Smallpox Create a list of symptoms a person would face if they had Smallpox.

Smallpox An epidemic of Smallpox broke out. Everyone was getting sick and dying from the virus. A man by the name of Edward Jenner noticed that Milk maids were not being infected with the virus.

Got Milk! Milk maids- Before milking machines there were Milk maids. These were women that were responsible for milking the cattle in the morning at lunch and at night.

Jenner’s Experiment Tools of the experiment A needle A vaccination A boy

Jenner’s Experiment Jenner used his son. He injected the boy with the vaccine made from the Cowpox. Jenner then injected the boy with Smallpox. The results were a success. What problems do you see with doing this type of experiment today?

Human and Animal Rights People have fought for the fair treatment of animals and humans when it comes to medical treatments. To make a human a Guinea pig without testing anything would be inhumane.

Jenner’s Tools Jenner created a special needle that would provide the vaccine for Smallpox.

Vacca Vacca is the Latin word for cow. Jenner created the world’s first vaccination. The name vaccination came from the Latin word vacca.

Closure Today we learned about the Smallpox virus and how Jenner created a vaccination for the virus.
