StarPac Flow Calculation & StarTalk

Where does the Valtek Flow Equation come from? ANSI/ISA -S defines the flow equations as they relate to control valves. Valtek Sizing and Selection Manual Section 3 contains the information in a simplified form. Valve Flow equations are quite good with accurate characterization data.

The Basic flow equation Based on Bernoulli’s equation. Fundamentally differential pressure measurement

Similarities with Orifice plate Differential pressure measurement. Capacity factor part of equation. Restriction of flow required.

Differences from Orifice plate Valve is a designed restriction in the process, orifice plate is not. Valve differential pressure increases at low flow rates. StarPac works in a wide range of flow conditions: Flashing, cavitating, etc.

Differences from Orifice plate (Cont.) Orifice requires a repeatable meter run, StarPac generates its own. StarPac has 30:1 rangeability.

Flow vs. DP for an Orifice

Flow vs. DP for StarPac

ISA Flow Equation as Programmed into StarPac A B C D E

Measure Inputs, Determine Phase (A)

Gas Properties (B)

Gas Flow (C)

Liquid Properties (D)

Liquid Flow (E)

How it works... T P2 P1 Valve Cv, Fl & Xt Data stored as function of stroke Digital Positioner

Short Lag System Higher Integral (pepeats/minute) can be applied Faster response system (Dp device), Flow controller and final control element are the same.

Accuracy Repeatability and response time are key closed loop control issues. StarPac Calibration is generalized for very wide range of operating conditions.
